My review: I enjoyed Heart of Gold by Robin Lee Hatcher. Her plot is good, but I think she could have developed it a little more. I enjoyed the characters of Shannon and Matthew, but I think they could have had a little more depth. All in all it was a good read, however; there really wasn't anything that made me say, "Wow, that was an awesome book!" I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a light easy read. I would also read more by this author. She just wouldn't be my first choice. My review: When I first started reading this book, Beyond Molasses Creek, I had a hard time getting into it. The more I read however the harder it was for me to put it down. Nicole Seitz has taken three individuals that are completely different and entertwined their lives. Though written in the present, Ally, Vesey, and Sunila take the reader on a journey that spans fifty plus years and hundreds of miles. Ms. Seitz's word pictures are amazing, as well as her ability to tell a story. The only disappointed I had with the story is one that seems to be too common with Christian authors. While God and heaven are mentioned and Ally specifically is searching, Ms. Seitz does not take the opportunity God has given her to share the specific good news of the gospel, or encourage the believer in their walk with God. I believe that every Christian author should use their God-given talents to point readers to their Heavenly Father and the promises found in His Word. Ms. Seitz is a wonderful story-teller and I look forward to reading more of her books. I can only pray that if Ms. Seitz herself is searching, that she will find Christ and the peace that only He can give, and then share that Christ with her readers. My review: The more books I read by Cindy Woodsmall the more I look forward to reading them all. The Harvest of Grace is another book in the Ada's House series. Ms. Woodsmall has taken the characters of Aaron and Sylvia and shown that even the Amish struggle with the same sin-nature we all have. Just because the Amish live within a strict community doesn't mean they are immune to fleshly desires. But, Ms. Woodsmall has also shown that the forgiveness of God extends to all and is freely given. I enjoyed reading about Aaron and Sylvia as well as catching up with other charaters from the Ada's House series. Ms. Woodsmall writes about real people in real-life situations, and that is one of the things I appreciate about her books. This book was no exception. My review: Once again I am reading a series out of order. Softly and Tenderly is the second book in the Songbird series by Sara Evans and Rachel Hauck. I started with the third and have not read the first one yet. The authors did pretty good filling in background information, but I highly recommend reading these books in order. I enjoyed this book but not as much as the third one, Love Lifted Me. The authors have incorporated tough issues into the plot that can happen to anyone, and it serves to remind the reader that we have to constantly guard our hearts. This is another book that will draw the reader into the lives of the characters. First Date

My review: It took my brain a few pages to become acclimated to a teenage fiction book, but once it did, I really enjoyed the book First Date by Krista McGee. The plot was not really reality, but one that a typical teenage girl would love. I loved Addy's character immediately and her honesty made me laugh. Teenage girls will be able to relate to the spiritual struggles that Addy has as well as be encouraged in their own spiritual walk. Ms. McGee has based this story loosely on the story of Esther which also adds to the fun of the plot. I look forward to reading more books by Krista McGee and will certainly be saving this book for my own daughter to read in a few years. Bittersweet Surrender

After reading Smitten I was looking forward to reading Bittersweet Surrender by Diann Hunt. Unfortunately I was disappointed. To me the book was too "busy". Ms. Hunt tried to tackle too many issues for one book and didn't seem to resolve any of them. Also, this book is classified as Christian fiction, but I didn't really see a lot of Biblical direction at all. A few references to prayer and church and a verse here and there just don't do it for me. When I read a Christian book I want to be encouraged and challenged in my faith. That did not happen with this book. Ms. Hunt has a great story-line and ideas. She just didn't take those ideas as far as they could have gone. My review: Wow! I was up until 1:30 in the morning finishing this book. There just wasn't a good stopping place. I couldn't quit turning pages until it was finished. I have read a few books by Cindy Woodsmall but this is by far the best one I have read yet. My only regret is that I have not had the opportunity to read the first two books in this series before I read this one. Ms. Woodsmall did a good job filling in important details from the previous books, but it just wasn't the same. A message of forgiveness is found throughout the book. Ms. Woodsmall showed that forgiveness is not always easy, but with God's help we can forgive even when grievously sinned against. Her characters were real and the situations believable. My review: A great book to read with the lessons of love, forgiveness, and trust written throughout the pages. The authors, Sara Evans and Rachel Hauck, did a great job writing a story that is down-to-earth and practical. The circumstances surrounding the plot could happen to anyone. The lessons are practical for everyone. As you read you will want to cry, yell, give advice, and cheer. A book that will have your emotions changing from one scene to the next as you read. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone that likes to read Christian fiction. My review: I was so excited to finally be able to read the sequel to Here Burns My Candle. I was not disappointed. Liz Curtis Higgs is an amazing author. Her care in presenting accurate historical details is obvious. I love how she wove the unique setting of Scotland and it's customs into the Biblical account of Ruth and Naomi. The reader must remember that this is a work of fiction, but it is fun to see Ruth and Naomi unfold throughout the pages of this book in the characters of Elisabeth and Marjory. God's faithfulness and the promise of a redeemer are very evident as you read. This is a book that will keep you reading until the wee hours of the morning, and when you are finished you will be drawn to your Bible to read the book of Ruth. I highly recommend Mine is the Night. Smitten

As the title suggests, Smitten is a romantic novel. This book is a collection of four short stories. They all take place in the small town of Smitten where the survival of the town depends on the mill. When four friends hear that the mill is closing, they begin a campaign to save their town. Natalie, Julia, Shelby, and Reese each have their own story. As each one finds a way to capitalize on the name of their town, they realize that love follows closely at their heels. Natalie already owns a small business, Mountain Perks, that will appeal to couples seeking a romantic getaway destination. Julia once worked for a successful spa in NYC. What every romantic destination needs is a high-end spa. Is Julia the person to open one? Shelby has an etiquette school. Incorporating parties, ballroom dancing, and unique clothing designs is her way of adding appeal to their town. Reese is the opposite of Shelby. She is ready to open an outfitters shop to cater to those that love the great outdoors. All four women work hard to change their town from a mill town to a romantic destination.

The authors of this book, Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Diann Hunt, and Denise Hunter have written an enjoyable book. Friends themselves, they have each written a short story about four friends with their own personalities ascribed to their characters. I particularly liked the way each story fit together to tell the story of the town of Smitten. These authors did a great job collaborating. If you are looking for a light read this is the book for you. It is a totally predictable book, but one you can enjoy from beginning to end. An Amish Wedding

An Amish Wedding is a collection of three short stories written by three different authors. A Perfect Secret is written by Kelly Long. A Perfect Match is written by Kathleen Fuller. A Perfect Plan is written by Beth Wiseman. Each story is entertwined as the same characters are found in each story.

In A Perfect Secret the reader is introduced to Rose Bender. She agrees to marry Luke Lantz who has been her best friend most of her life. He is very practical and matter-of-fact. At least Rose thinks he is. As the days progress toward their wedding she begins to wonder is she ever really knew Luke at all.

In A Perfect Match the reader is introduced to Naomi King. She owns her own bakery business, and finds herself agreeing to help her friend and employee Margaret to find a husband. When Zeke Lapp shows up in order to attend a friend's wedding, he finds himself the object of a matchmaking scheme. His ideas differ from theirs as to which girl would be best for him, and Naomi finds herself torn between helping her friend and being true to her own heart.

In A Perfect Plan the reader is introduced to Priscilla King. As she plans for her wedding everything seems to be going wrong. She has always had to have everything planned out and running smoothly. So, when things don't go as planned she begins to wonder if she is in God's will. Is she really supposed to marry Chester Lapp? Her heart says yes, but her circumstances say no.

I really enjoyed reading all three stories. A Perfect Secret had some unexpected surprises that kept me turning the pages. A Perfect Match was predictable, but an enjoyable story nonetheless. A Perfect Plan was a bit unbelievable with all the things that did go wrong. And Priscilla's character was a bit ridiculous, but I did enjoy reading the story anyway. It certainly was not as good as the other three. If you need a quick light read this would be a good book for that. The cover will capture your attention and draw you into the first pages of the book which in themselves will keep you reading. She has a writing style that will hold your interest. But what about the content of the book? I certainly can't critique it, but I can say that I appreciate the candidness and transparency that Amy Julia displayed. She opened her heart in the pages of this book. Her struggles, fears, and triumphs are all laid out for everyone to read. She was honest and who can argue against that! This book was also eye opening for me. How do we really view children that have special needs? I know this book will help me to think twice about what I say to the parents of these special children. Three Cups by Tony Townsley and Mark St. Germain is about a young boy who receives three cups and the start of an allowance for his birthday. Each week his allowance is divided among the three cups marked give, save, and spend. When his cups start filling up, his mom takes him to the bank to open an account and deposit his savings money. He learns to save his spending money until he has enough to buy the item he wants. The giving money is used to help others in need. As the young boy grows, he learns to divide any money he receives into his three cups.

This is a great book that teaches the basics for managing money. Parents will find this to be a wonderful tool as they begin to teach their children about money. The important thing to remember is not how much money your child has, but how he uses his money. It is all about establishing good habits that can last a lifetime. The end of the book also has a parent's guide to help them get started. Max Lucado has taken his beloved character Hermie and written a little Hermie book for preschoolers. Thank you, God, for Blessing Me is little Hermie's prayer of thanks for all the blessings that God has given him. A very short but poignant prayer that preschoolers can relate to and copy. Little Hermie is thankful for everything from personal needs to friends. Even though it is a short book, parents can take time with their preschooler to expand on being thankful for the things God has specifically given them. I love the pictures and the front cover caught the eye of my three-year-old right away. She enjoyed just looking at the pictures even before I read the book. Thankfulness can be taught to very young children, and this is an excellent book to help with that lesson. I am sure we will be reading it often. My review: As I began reading this book, I was quickly reminded why I enjoy books written by Colleen Coble. I was immediately pulled into the story and didn't want to put it down. In fact, I finished this book the same day I started it. Ms. Coble has woven a story of intrigue that will keep you guessing. I was able to put together some of the pieces as I read, but was not able to put it all together. It was a fast-moving plot with plenty to keep you on the edge of your seat. Her characters are down-to-earth and believable. An underlying message of trust could be found throughout the book but not in a "preachy" way. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and even though it is the fourth book in a series, it can stand alone. I do look forward to reading the first three! My review: The Christmas Singing by Cindy Woodsmall is a beautiful love story. She has chosen to take the Amish out of their comfort zone to weave the backdrop of this story. Even though the Amish tend to live in their own "little world," this story is a reminder of how their lives can and do interact with the world outside. They have misunderstandings, hurt feelings, pain, sickness, and heartache just like anyone else and do not always react in the way that even they have been taught. Ms. Woodsmall has written a simple yet poignant story that you won't want to put down. Her characters are easy to relate to, and the lessons are relevant for everyone. My review: I enjoyed the last book I read by Beth Wiseman and was excited to read this one as well. The Wonder of Your Love certainly kept my attention without any problem. I enjoyed catching a glimpse of the characters from the previous book I read, as well as getting to know new characters in the same Amish community. Beth Wiseman included an interesting mix of Amish and English characters which I thought made the story line that much more enjoyable. The characters Katie Ann and Eli were at opposite points in their life, and I liked how Ms. Wiseman weaved their lives together. While I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I have a hard time with how the Amish are portrayed. This is only the second book I have read by this author, so I did not mention it in the review of my last book by her because I wasn't sure if that was typical of her books. She doesn't seem to want to make them truly Amish. I haven't studied and don't know a lot about the Amish way of life, but Ms. Wiseman seems to make them more "worldly" than they should be. Her books have just left me a bit confused. I do look forward to reading more by this author, and maybe I am the one that needs to learn a little more about the Amish. My review: I would not consider Shadows on the Sand an excellent book, but it was good. The author chose to cover a lot of "stuff" in the lives of her characters, but the biggest theme seemed to be forgiveness. The mystery was intriguing and kept me reading. The romance was appropriate and not overdone. I enjoyed the characters and setting, and I look forward to reading more books by Gayle Roper. I enjoy Lisa Tawn Bergren's adult fiction, so I was looking forward to reading one of her children's books. If her other children's books are as good as this one, she is a great children's author as well. God Gave Us You is a simple story that teaches children what a wonderful gift from God they are. As Little Cub asks questions about where she came from, Mama Cub answers lovingly and ends each answer with the phrase "God gave us you." Repeating phrases in books for young children is great, and "God gave us you" is a wonderful phrase to repeat! This is a story that will never get old. My three year old loves books, and I am sure that God Gave Us You will be read over and over again. The copy of the book that I received is a board book which is perfect for small hands. The colorful illustrations are fun to look at and discuss as well. If you are in the market for children's books, this is a book that would be great to add to your collection. My review: As usual, Karen Kingsbury has written a book that you can't put down. The characters are so real that you will find yourself wishing someone would introduce you to them. The circumstances are so real that you will find yourself praying to God that that will never happen to you. The Biblical truths are so real that you will find yourself learning and growing from them. Karen Kingsbury is able to write a book where people live! She is able to make you feel the emotion of the characters and circumstances in her books and when the book is finished you will wish there was more. Waiting For Morning is one of those books. My review: This was another book that kept me reading till the wee hours of the morning. Lisa Tawn Bergren does a great job weaving a story that will draw you in. You will cheer for Dane and Krista, feel anger toward Charlotte, and finally understand the power of forgiveness. This is a story that will cause you to think about what is truly important in life. I also like the way the book was written. The actual time-frame for the story was a few days, but facts from the past were needed for understanding. These facts were written as memories and placed between the chapters. Anyone would benefit from the lessons presented in this book, but I highly recommend this to those who did not have a very good relationship with a parent. Even though this book focused on the dads, I was challenged as a mom to take seriously the responsibility of rearing children that love God and love people. Every parents should read this book. My review: I enjoyed Sweet Sanctuary. I wasn't sure what to expect by reading the back cover, and I am glad I decided to read the book. The authors did a great job weaving a story with real-life complexities and spiritual struggles. While situations may not be identical, mothers especially can relate to Wren's challenges and worries. I enjoyed the story-line, but the end of the book came abruptly. I felt the authors did not take enough time resolving some of the family issues. The relationship between Wren and Paul seemed to develop a little too quickly as well. Overall, however; it was an enjoyable story with believable characters and situations. My review: Restless in Carolina was a fun book to read! Tamara Leigh has created a heroine that you won't forget. Bridget Pickwick-Buchanan was not at all what I expected from having read the back of the book. Her initial physical description totally caught me off-guard, and yet it helped make the book more enjoyable. Full of humor and very human, I fell in love with the character of Bridget immediately. I found myself reading quickly just to see what she would do and say next. Tamara Leigh developed a plot that kept me captivated, as well as characters that fit the plot. Wonderful humor, a bit of intrigue, delightful characters, and a much needed lesson on the power of forgiveness come together to make this a book you won't want to put down, as well as a book that you won't want to end. I certainly look forward to reading more by this author.

My review: The picture on the cover of The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck does not fit at all. I almost did not request a review copy because of the cover, but I am so glad I did! This is the first book I have read by Kathleen Y'Barbo. I enjoyed her writing style, and I loved the humor throughout the book. I never knew what Charlotte was going to do next, and loved her character because of it. This was one of those books that I didn't want to put down. Even though it is the third book in a series, I did not feel like I was missing anything from not having read the first two. However, if the first two are as funny and well-written as this one, I know I will thoroughly enjoy them! I look forward to reading more by this author. My review: This is another enjoyable historical novel that I can recommend. I enjoyed getting to know Lucy and Rowena. The author, Nancy Moser, did a great job distinguishing their stations and yet melding their lives together. Sofia was a frustrating yet likable character, and Lucy and Sofia's mother was a perfect balance for the two. It didn't take long to figure out the "secrets" of the book, so the ending was predictable. But, all in all this was a book that I really enjoyed reading. I am glad I gave the author another chance. Spring for Susannah

My review: Writing my review for some books is very hard, and this is one such book. I was excited to read Spring for Susannah after reading the description from the back of the book. As I started reading I enjoyed Jesse's sense of humor, and the short prayerful phrases at the beginning of each chapter. His spiritual leadership and obvious love of God and the Scriptures was very evident. I wasn't far into the book, however, when the author seemed to become obsessed with bedroom scenes. I do enjoy a good romantic book, and while there was nothing inappropriate about the way these scenes were written, enough is enough! I kept thinking to myself, oh no, not again! If the reader is married she knows what happens between a husband and a wife. If the reader is a teenager or unmarried woman, constantly reading those types of scenes could lead to sinful desires or unwanted frustration. Our teens today are bombarded with sex almost everywhere they go. We need Christian fiction that portrays sex in a healthy way that is not overdone. And, that is exactly what this book is-overdone! Needless to say, I was happy to see Jesse leave to find work. However, his leaving did not fit his character. I found that to be inconsistent. Some of the minor characters did not seem necessary, and I couldn't understand what they had to do with the rest of the book. Some scenes were rushed and not fully developed, and the whole book ended very abruptly. I really wanted to like this book, but I do a lot of reading and this book fell far short! Reading this book has given me a fresh desire to go back to the Scriptures to read and study the Biblical account of Esther again. A novel that incites the study of Scripture is a well-written novel indeed! My review: Too Rich For A Bride continues the story of the Sinclair sisters. Even though I have not read the first book, I did not feel lost in this one. It can certainly stand alone. For the most part this is a typical romantic fiction book, however; I appreciate that the author did not focus so much on how each character looked on the outside, but what was on the inside. The characters are likeable and the situations are real. Mrs. Hodgson set this story in the late 1800's, but the lessons learned are so relevant for today. This was an easy enjoyable book to read. I look forward to reading more about the Sinclair sisters.

I think Mrs. John did a good job developing a storyline that will pull the reader in and hold their attention. I will have to say though that Mrs. John's choice of character names was rather corny. While I enjoyed the story I had a hard time getting past the names Jack and Jill as well as the references to the nursery rhyme. I think it was just plain silly and didn't fit at all. If it weren't for the nursery rhyme references I would highly recommend this book. However, I will only give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

Even though some dads might already take their daughters on dates, Greg gives ideas and specifics about what does and does not constitute as a date. Some dads might find that their idea of a date is not going to make the cut. Each chapter is short and full of humor, so men that don't enjoy reading as a general rule will find this book very easy to read. Greg has also included helpful tools at the end of the book to help jump-start dads who might be unsure exactly what to do and how to start. Every dad who has daughters needs to read this book. Moms need to read the book as well if for no other reason than to support dad in one of his most important endeavors: "Becoming her hero, one date at a time." This is another book that I really enjoyed. It was fun getting to know each of the three main characters. I especially enjoyed Betty Ruth. The reader never quite knows what Betty Ruth will do next. Toward the end of the book the author had me a little worried about an idea that Betty Ruth presented. I was afraid the book was going to end in an unbelievable way, but Mrs. Pittman managed to pull away from the unbelievable and end in a satisfactory way. I was very glad that she did!

Mrs. Pittman also painted a very realistic picture of Lilly's background. The absence of grace and love in Lilly's growing up years is unfortunately common in many fundamental circles today. Lilly finds that the picture her mother painted of God is not accurate. Through the character of Lilly, Mrs. Pittman does a great job portraying true forgiveness. This is a great book to read! My review: Wow! What a convicting book! Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Dale Recinella is a great story-teller, and as you read you will be drawn into the book. The story of his life, and his determination to obey what Jesus says will become a challenge to each reader. A powerful reminder that we should seek first the Kingdom of God. I was a little wary of what I would find on the pages of this book when I realized that Dale was Catholic. While there are a few doctrinal issues, that is not the main focus of the book. Any christian could read this book and come away with a renewed sense of the importance of loving God and loving people. I highly recommend that every christian read this book. My review: The prologue pulled me into the book from the start. I enjoy Amish fiction and this one is different from most. Not only does the Sommer family leave their community, but they move to a community that is not afraid of the English. The struggles and emotions they face are real. Tricia Goyer has written in such a way and developed her characters so that you will be drawn into their lives and feel their joy and pain. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Courting Miss Amsel was a fun book to read. Edythe Amsel arrives in the small town of Walnut Hill to teach the school children. The single men immediately see her as a potential wife, but she makes it abundantly clear that she has no desire to get married. So why does Joel Townsend always catch her eye? A single man raising his two orphaned nephews is the last thing she wants anything to do with. Her unusual teaching methods and one troublesome student soon become the talk of the town, and it doesn't take Edythe long to find out that Joel is on her side. Are enough of the parents on her side, or will the town council vote to relieve her of her teaching responsibilities? Does God really care what happens to a small town teacher who feels she must always have control? This is another great book by Kim Vogel Sawyer from Bethany House Publishers. I really enjoyed the storyline as well as the characters. This is a book that you won't want to put down once you start reading. You will laugh, argue, plead, and symphathize. The characters are very real, and the storyline engaging. The theme of allowing God to have control is quite appropriate. I think that is a lesson that all Christians need reminded of on a regular basis. This book provided that reminder in a fun effective way. I will be happy to recommend this book to others. Tillie talks to her about heaven, but since her "father" has something to do with it, Roz is not sure she will make it to heaven. As her father secretly reenters her life she begins to ignore the past and trusts what he tells her. Although her friend Mara warns her, and her mom tells her to forget about him, she finds herself unable to break free from the power he seems to have over her. And what will she do about the secrets her brother asks her to keep? This story by Ann Tatlock is powerful! She writes from a young girl's point of view, and touches on several difficult topics. While this story is a work of fiction, the struggles that Roz and her family experience are very real, and these struggles are brought to life on the pages of this book. This book is a great reminder to christians to open their eyes and see what is going on around them! Promises to Keep will capture your attention from the very first pages and will hold you captive until the very end. I enjoy reading Amish fiction, so I was excited to try another author. Plain Proposal by Beth Wiseman is the story of a young Amish girl named Miriam Raber. Miriam is in her rumschpringe, but has not been tempted to try much of what is forbidden. The arrival of her English cousin, Shelby, has Miriam's mother, Rebecca, worried that some of Miriam's new and unexpected actions are a result of Shelby's influence. However, Rebecca has forgotten what it is like to be newly in love. Saul Fisher has finally seemed to notice Miriam much to her delight. She is willing to do anything it takes to be with him but is afraid her choices will tear her from her family. Saul has problems of his own which threaten his dreams. When Rebecca unexpectedly steps into the lives of Saul's family she begins to realize what it means to follow God's leading even when the outcome is not what she wants. Plain Proposal is a very enjoyable book to read. It has a very simple plot, but has some unexpected twists to the story. While this is an Amish story, the Amish tradition is not as prevalent as in other books I have read. It isn't really clear what "type" of Amish they are just by reading the story, although at the beginning of the book they are referred to as Old Order Amish. I don't think that is a negative, just unexpected. The characters were easy to understand and feelings and emotions were conveyed very well. While this is not the most exciting book I have ever read, I did enjoy it and would recommend it to others. Here Burns My Candle

If you like historical fiction, you will love the book, Here Burns My Candle, by Liz Curtis Higgs. It is set in the 18th century in Edinburgh, Scotland and is full of historical detail. This is a story filled with secrets, love, despair, hope, betrayal, faithfulness, loss, and peace. As you read about a young lady and her mother-in-law, you will begin to realize there is something familiar about what you are reading. The story of Ruth will begin to emerge from its pages. As I got deeper into this book, I could not put it down. I was totally drawn into the story! The characters were well-developed and the plot engaging. It is a well-written story that includes a lot of historical facts and details. The dialogue at times is a bit tedious although understandable in context, but the author included a Scottish glossary in the back to help. I especially liked the way the story of Ruth was written into the pages. I did not expect it, but it made the book that much more intriguing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. You will not be disappointed! In the meantime, I am looking forward to reading the next book. In this book he helps the reader understand the difference between praying a list and praying a worship-based prayer. Henderson shows you how to: "Overcome common barriers to praying effectively, awaken your prayer life with simple, biblical patterns of prayer, [and] enjoy Spirit-led prayer sparked by Scripture passages." In other words, the reader is shown how to seek God's face rather than His hand. This is a very practical book for any Christian to read, especially new believers. Henderson writes in a way that is easy to read and understand. He helps the reader realize how rewarding a Christian's prayer life can be by giving Biblical guidance and a practical plan for taking their prayer life from "ordinary to extraordinary." While praying worship-based prayers is not new to me, there are many people who do not understand. This is a great tool to offer to Christians who are struggling in their prayer life. Paws and Tales

This is the first video I have reviewed and my children were more than happy to help. Paws and Tales by Chuck Swindoll is a very good children's video. Two different stories are included on the DVD and include The Good Shepherd and A Good Foundation. The Good Shepherd tells of two young boys anxious to help the Shepherd and be junior shepherds for the day. They soon realize that it is not as easy as it sounds. Children will discover how Jesus, our Good Shepherd cares for us. A Good Foundation teaches children why having a good foundation is an important part of living a godly life. C.J. and Staci discover this truth in the story as they build a clubhouse in an old rotten tree.

A great video for children! Paws and Tales has cute animation, two great stories, and wonderful Biblical truths. My three children loved watching this movie, and as soon as the DVD had ended they immediately wanted to watch it again. It is great to have DVD's that help children understand Biblical truths that we are trying to teach at home. Chuck Swindoll has provided a perfect tool for parents to use.

My daughter, Suzannah, says she learned that sheep are dumb so the shepherd had to take care of them. She says that she enjoyed watching these stories and would love to watch more. Her favorite character was Staci, because she didn't like the way the sheep smell!

There have been many books written on love and marriage. While I have not read a lot of these books I am sure that Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs would be pretty close to the top of a list of good resources. As you read this book Dr. Eggerichs explains what the crazy and energizing cycles are. He then focuses on two important aspects: love and respect. Love deals with the needs that women have. Dr. Eggerichs gives men an acronym (couple) to help them understand how to love their wives. Respect deals with the needs that men have. He gives women an acronym (chairs) to help them understand how to respect their husbands. When following the guidelines of these two acronyms, couples can learn to stay off the crazy cycle and spend more time on the energizing cycle.

This was a very informative scripture-based book. A lot of verses were used to support the ideas that were laid out. Dr. Eggerichs wrote in a manner that was easy to read and understand. Most non-fiction books take longer for me to read; however, I was able to read through Love and Respect fairly quick. I appreciate how the book deals with the husband and wife separately. Equal responsibility is given to each spouse, and when husband and wife choose to follow Biblical principles and work as an individual there will be unity as a couple. Amy Inspired

I only thought I had saved the best for last. Amy Inspired is the last of my Bethany House fiction books to review from the last set they sent me. What a huge disappointment! I had a really hard time getting into the book. In the story, Amy Gallagher was receiving one rejection letter after another in regards to her writing. I almost felt like the author was being autobiographical, and I could understand why those rejection letters were coming. Bethany Pierce, the author, seemed to be too wordy to me with a lot of unnecessary fluff. I really couldn't find a plot. I got to chapter 5 and finally had to give up. I just couldn't finish the book. Although considered Christian fiction, she had no real theme or gospel message to be gleaned from the pages of this book. Pierce's fascination with "underwear" and other like topics reminded me of my five year old. I could find no real purpose for this book I am sorry to say. Bethany House usually publishes outstanding Christian fiction that I can enjoy and recommend to others. They really missed the mark on this one. Hatteras Girl

The book Hatteras Girl by Alice J. Wisler is a story that is set in North Carolina's Outer Banks. Jackie Donovan hopes to find a husband without the help of her relatives, works as a reporter for a local magazine, and dreams of one day with her friend Minnie owning the Bailey House bed-and-breakfast. Life has taken on a routine of helping her widowed friend Minnie and her son Zane, but it seems that God is answering her prayers when she is asked to interview and write an article on Davis Erickson for the magazine Lighthouse Views. Jackie soon learns that Davis owns the Bailey House, and hopes that he will soon hold her heart as well. Unexpected news seems to shatter both of her dreams, but in the process Jackie learns that to be still and wait on God can bring much greater happiness than she ever imagined.

Books written in first person are not usually my favorite, but the book Hatteras Girl, though not a favorite, is one that I enjoyed. There was nothing new about the storyline, and the ending seemed anticlimatic to me. That could be because it ended in a typical fashion. While there were some good characters there seemed to be a few too many to keep up with. The lessons of being still and waiting on God are very good, but they seemed to just be thrown in because a Christian book needs a Christian lesson. I think these lessons could have been incorporated throughout the story making them more believable. While this was a fun story to read, it is not at the top of my recommended books. Homosexuality and the Christian

Homosexuality and christian are two words that people do not like to see together and causes great discomfort. Homosexuality and the Christian by Mark A. Yarhouse is a much needed book. On the pages of this book Dr. Yarhouse delves into a subject that is typically taboo in Christian circles. He tackles difficult questions and answers them with scripture. The book is separated into three sections. The first section deals with "The big picture." Dr. Yarhouse explains exactly what the Bible has to say about homosexuality, and then he carefully describes sexual identity and how it develops. He moves on to the causes and the topic of changing sexual orientation in the last part of this section. Section two deals with questions and answers for family members who are faced with the announcement of a gay identity. Section three covers the church and the proper response to those who are having same-sex attractions.

I found this to be a very helpful book that every christian should read. Dr. Yarhouse writes in a way that is easy to understand and gives greater insight into the subject of homosexuality. He encourages the christian to understand this subject by providing information that is taken from God's Word as well as today's research. As this topic continues to be very controversial, we as christians must remember to speak the truth in love. A Rush of Wings

A Rush of Wings by Kristen Heitzmann is a book I have enjoyed reading again. Noelle St. Claire is running away although she is not sure why. She ends up at a horse ranch after riding on a bus for days with no real destination in mind. There she meets two brothers who are totally different. Rick Spencer runs the ranch, and his brother Morgan visits quite frequently. As both brothers seek to know Noelle better, her past from which she has unknowingly run begins to catch up with her. As her world falls out from under her, she realizes that there is a Heavenly Father that will preserve her from all evil.

Although I read this book several years ago, I was excited to read it again. The fears that Noelle faced were real, and even though our fears may not stem from the same reasons or experiences we all need the same promises from Scripture for our own unique situations. I enjoyed the story, and Kristen Heitzmann was able to make the Word of God come alive on the pages of this book. It was an encouragement in my own spiritual walk. Cara Lynn James is a new author for me. I enjoyed reading her book Love on Assignment. This story is set in the early 1900's. A young lady named Charlotte Hale works at a newspaper as a secretary. She dreams of being a reporter, but just the fact that she is a woman makes her dream unreachable. When her boss offers her a chance to write a story, she can't believe her good luck and jumps at the opportunity. Mr. Phifer, the editor, asks her to live in the house of a professor as the governess to the professor's children. Professor Wilmont causes quite a stir with the articles he writes for another paper, and Mr. Phifer wants Charlotte to find anything she can to discredit the professor. Although her conscience gives her pause Charlotte accepts the job as governess. Little does she know that what she finds and experiences while working undercover will change her life and possibly destroy her dreams forever.

This is a well-written book that accurately shows the distinctions between the working class and the wealthy during this time-period. Mrs. James does an excellent job of describing and developing her characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the word pictures that she painted throughout the book. Not only does Mrs. James weave a tale of laughter, deception, romance, and secrets, she also displays the power of the gospel. I look forward to reading more from Mrs. James in the future. A Time to Embrace by Karen Kingsbury is a wonderful love story. Coach Reynolds and his wife, Abby, have just come through a rough time in their marriage, but are falling in love all over again. While everything on the home front seems to be going well, John is having increasing trouble at school and on the football field. False accusations and even a death threat are quickly leading to the termination of John's job as coach for the Marion High football team. As he contemplates retirement at the end of the season an accident changes everything. John's love and faith are tested as they never have been before. Not only does he have his own challenges to face, but the trials of his family and friends weigh heavy on him as well.

I always enjoy reading books by Karen Kingsbury and this one was no exception. Karen is able to put so much into one book it is nearly impossible to summarize. I laughed and cried as I was pulled into the story and lives of each of the characters. As you read this book God's love, faithfulness, and forgiveness will touch your own heart. Love's First Bloom by Delia Parr is about a young woman named Ruth Livingstone. Her minister father sends her away in the dark of night with a young child whose mother had just been killed. To make matters worse, it is the minister who is being charged with the murder. Ruth travels under an assumed name to live with a family whom she has never met to care for a child she does not know and has become mother to with no one else the wiser. Worried about her father and frustrated with responsibilities that she has no idea how to perform Ruth seeks solace in a garden that has long been neglected. As her father's life is scrutinized her own life is being hounded by reporters intent on finding her. Can she truly trust the young man that has moved into the cottage beside her garden? Can she trust God to do what is best for her and the young child that has been thrust into her care?

Delia Parr did a great job developing a plot that is not your usual romantic fiction. While the ending is your typical "Happily ever after" ending the route she took to get there is totally different. I was drawn into the plot and found it very hard to put the book down in order to take care of my other responsibilities. The reader is able to sympathize with Ruth and will laugh and cry with her. In Every Heartbeat is about three orphans that head off to college together. Libby, Pete, and Bennett are three very different people but are very close friends. Each of these friends have their own goals and soon find that they are all headed in very different directions. As Libby, Pete, and Bennett begin to drift apart, circumstances beyond their control begin to draw them back together. They experience hurt, betrayal, anger, frustration, loyalty, love, and forgiveness. And through it all the love of God is shown to them in ways they never would have dreamed.

I really wasn't sure how to review this book. I did enjoy reading it, but I was able to put it down and not be drawn back. It took me awhile to finish it because of that reason. I think it is because In Every Heartbeat does not really have a plot. It is more of a narrative of Libby, Pete, and Bennett. I enjoyed reading about the lives of these three college students, but there was nothing to draw me into the very heart and mind of these characters. If you have nothing else to read this book will do. However, it would not be my first choice. A Suitor for Jenny by Margaret Brownley will give you quite a laugh. Jenny is determined to find suitable husbands for her two sisters. Upon arriving in the little town of Rocky Creek, Texas, Jenny immediately begins to stir up the town. With her manuel on how to find a husband in one hand and two reluctant sisters in tow with the other hand, this town will never be the same when Jenny is finished. Mary Lou and Brenda decide to do things their way, and Jenny's heart begins to betray her as well. As Jenny's well laid plans begin to unravel she starts to realize that God's plans are even better than her own. However, giving God control was certainly something that Jenny had never planned to do. Trusting God with her heart is one thing, but can she trust the Marshal with her heart as well?

A Suitor for Jenny is a great book for light reading. Mail-order bride books are common, but Margaret Brownley has taken a new spin for this book by having Jenny use a manuel to find husbands for her sisters. I enjoyed the change in plot and appreciate Ms. Brownley presenting the fact that God gave us a manuel that tells us everything we need to know. While not the best book that I have ever read I did enjoy reading it and would recommend it if someone asked. Masquerade

I just finished reading the book, Masquerade, by Nancy Moser. On the pages of this book, I found two very different girls. Charlotte Gleason finds out that her family's wealth has been lost, and her father has been named for his indescretions. In order for Charlotte to be provided for in the way she is accustomed, her parents sent her across the ocean to New York City to marry into a prestigious and wealthy family. Her ladies maid, who had also become a close friend, agreed to accompany Charlotte on the trip. Charlotte does not want to be told who to marry and contrives a plan to switch places with her maid/traveling companion, Dora Conners. Dora agrees to the plan and both girls find themselves in situations they could never have imagined.

This was not a book that really grabbed my attention in the first few chapters. The story line was nothing new at first. It was the usual rich family loses their wealth type beginning. However, as I continued to read I was pulled in by the plot. Masquerade never did become the type of book you just can't put down, but I did change my original impressions as I continued to read. The characters for the most part were well-developed and some had unexpected qualities that I did not originally foresee. There were some moments that caught me off-guard during the story, as well as some predictability. Overall, however, I do think Masquerade was an enjoyable book to read. Once again Bethany House has published another great fiction book. I have not read a lot by Tamera Alexander, but what I have read I have thoroughly enjoyed. This book, Within My Heart, is no exception. Set during the late 1800s, Within My Heart, is the story of a young widow. Rachel is struggling to keep her ranch from going under. Her two young sons are her motivation. She loves her town of Timber Ridge and the people in it. However, the one man she wishes to avoid seems determined to cross her path at every turn. The financial insecurity, death of a close friend, scare of an epidemic, and fear of losing her two sons draw her closer to her Savior and the one man she never dreamed she could love.

This book had my attention from the first page. I was transported back in time and felt like I was there in Timber Ridge. Not only did I feel like I was a part of Rachel's life, but the many secondary characters as well. The fears, laughter, insecurities, love, and frustrations became a part of me as I read. Most of all, I felt the trust Rachel had in her Savior even when her flesh was weak. I had a hard time putting this book down in order to tend to other responsibilities and was kept reading until late at night long after I should have been in bed. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good fiction book. Tamera Alexander will be added to my list of favorite authors. The Strategically Small Church

Brandon J. O'Brien uses his book, The Strategically Small Church, to show that the size of a church does not necessarily indicate the success of the ministry. He focuses on the fact that a small church often has more to offer than a mega church. In today's society we have been trained to think that bigger is better. O'Brien seeks to retrain our thinking when it comes to the local church. He gives examples of small churches and their unique ministries and how those ministries have great potential for advancing Christ's kingdom. Specific dos and don'ts are not the purpose of this book. Every congregation is different. O'Brien uses the words "strategically small" on purpose. Even large churches can accomplish having a "small" church. These large churches need to analyze and learn from the strategies of small churches.

I found this to be a very interesting book. Having been in small churches all my life, I can identify with the mindset of wanting to grow numerically. I appreciate the real-life examples of small churches and how effective they are because of their size. I also like the fact that there are examples of large churches that have learned to become "strategically small." While I don't necessarily agree with everthing in this book, I can agree that Christians need to retrain their thinking. Bigger does not always mean better. These are stories of real men and women like us that lived hundreds of years ago as well many who are still living today. All of these people have made a difference by using the talents, positions, and resources that God has given them. Some of the stories had huge widespread results, while others worked to change one small corner, but throughout each story the reader can see how God uses ordinary people to help change the world. At the end of each section Toby Mac uses that sections theme to challenge the reader.

This is a very inspiring book. It was interesting to read the many different stories and the effects these people had in many ways and places. It will help you realize that there is so much more we as individuals can do to advance the kingdom of Christ. I appreciate the challenge at the end of each section. Toby Mac causes you to think about what you are already doing or what you can do to make a difference in the lives of others. The Vigilante's Bride

I always look forward to new books from Bethany House, and this book is another excellent book published by them. The Vigilante's Bride by Yvonne Harris is about a young girl named Emily Harris sent from an orphanage as a mail-order bride. While on the way to meet and marry her husband-to-be, Bart Axel, Emily is kidnapped from the stage she was traveling on. With all good intentions Luke Sullivan has kidnapped her and takes her to the orphanage where he himself grew up. Emily soon realizes exactly what kind of man Luke has rescued her from. Luke and Emily's frequent arguments and frustrations soon develop into a love neither one expected. However, the anger and greed of Bart Axel cause fear and problems beyond what even they could imagine.

Harris has written a book full of humor and romance with suspense sprinkled in. It was a fun book to read and wasn't your typical mail-order bride story. I was kept wanting to turn the next page to see what would happen next. Although I hated to come to the end of the story, it is a well-developed story and ended without being overdone. Catching Moondrops

I have found a new author whose books I will look forward to reading. Catching Moondrops by Jennifer Erin Valent is the third book in a trilogy. Although I did not read the first two books, I did not feel "lost" while reading the third. The story is about a nineteen year old girl named Jessilyn Lassiter in the summer of 1938. We find romance for Jessilyn with a young man named Luke Talley, a friendship as close as sisters with Gemma, and a controversial doctor named Tal Pritchett. Racial prejudice is the underlying theme. Tension mounts throughout the book and hate and anger swirl around Jessilyn, Luke, her black friend, Gemma, and the young black doctor Tal Pritchett. As the Klu Klux Klan becomes active, Jessilyn has to realize that her feelings of anger and hate toward the Klan members are just as wrong as the Klan members whose hate has terrorized her family, friends, and town.

Valent tells a powerful story. She gives just a glimpse of the hate that consummed the members of the Ku Klux Klan during this point in history. As I read I felt like I was transported back in time. It was difficult to keep from being sucked into the same hate and anger that Jessilyn found herself in. However, the message of God's love and forgiveness shown through even during some of the darkest moments recorded in the story. While we can hate what the Klan did to innocent people not just in this story but to real people, Valent helps us see through the character of Jessilyn that our own hate and anger must only be directed toward the sin and not the sinner. Valent also displays the principle of "If thine enemy hunger give him bread, and if he thirst give him drink" through the characters of Gemma and Tal. There are many lessons that can be learned through the reading of this book.

I think Valent did a great job on this book. It was thought-provoking with just the right amount of romance and humor sprinkled in. I had a hard time putting it down. The King's Christmas List

Teaching a child to give to others when it actually costs them is often hard to do. The King's Christmas List, by Eldon Johnson, is an excellent book that teaches children how to give to Jesus in a fun, imaginative, easy to understand way. The story is about a little girl, Emma, and her dog who are invited to the King's birthday party. She selects a gift to take, but on her way to the party Emma ends up giving that gift to someone in need as well as two of her own personal belongings. After arriving at the party she discovers that she did indeed give gifts to the King by giving to others who were in need (Matthew 25:40).

My three children and I enjoyed reading this story before bedtime tonight. As the Christmas season approaches this is a book that we will read over and over. I especially like how the story ended. The last two statements challenge the reader to continue the story in their own lives. When you turn the page you are directed to a website that gives a lot of ideas on how to help people in need. I have three children, so I am always excited to get new children's books to read. The Boy Who Changed the World by Andy Andrews was not only a fun book to read, but taught a wonderful lesson as well. Mr. Andrews based this children's book on another book that he has written for adults titled The Butterfly Effect. In this book, The Boy Who Changed the World, Mr. Andrews tells a story about four different men whose lives are intertwined by the decisions they make. These decisions effected the lives of more than 2 billion people. Mr. Andrews also reminds his audience that God created us to make a difference. Every decision we make whether good or bad will make a difference and can change the world.

I loved this book and the lesson it taught. The illustrations by Philip Hurst are great and cover most of each page. The size and hard cover make it easy to hold without being awkward. The only problem I had was that it was too hard for my three children to follow. My 7 year old really listened and tried to understand, but it was just too hard for him to keep the different men straight. I had to go back and try to help him figure it out. My 5 year old and 2 year old just love to be read to so they enjoyed it even though they weren't able to understand. All 3 children enjoyed the illustrations. This is a book that I will just put away for a couple of years and pull back out when they are a little bit older. The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews explains how even one small movement or decision can have a huge effect. He first explains the actual "butterfly effect," and then he describes how people can have that effect as well. He begins with a man named Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Chamberlain's actions on the battlefield on July 2, 1863 changed the course of history. After explaining how this happened, the author reminds us that everything we do matters. Andy then tells about men named Norman Borlaug, Henry Wallace, George Washington Carver, and Moses Carver and how their actions impacted billions of people. Andy helps us understand how our actions can also effect billions of people.

I found this book very interesting and thought provoking. I had never heard of the "butterfly effect" before I read this book. It is definitely an interesting concept that became very easy to understand after reading The Butterfly Effect. This book is a perfect gift-giving size. Each page in the book has illustrations or background colors. It is not a long book, but the message is very clear. I really enjoyed reading it. One Hand, Two Hands by Max Lucado is an absolutely delightful book! Written in verse form this book describes all that you can do with your hands. From everyday activities such as tying your shoe to helping mommy wash dishes, this book shows how God can use your hands in many ways. At the end of the book there is a page that gives ideas of other ways you can use your hands.

This is a perfect book for preschool age children. It has a wonderful message, and the illustrations by Gaby Hansen are fun, bright, and adorable. The pictures themselves tell a beautiful story. I read it to my girls, ages two and five, and they loved it. This is a book that we will be reading over and over. I'm sure it won't take long and they will be "reading" the book to me. One Hand, Two Hands is a book that will make a wonderful gift. I won't be giving my copy away, but I will certainly be willing to buy other copies to give as gifts. What an unexpected book! Let's Do Lunch is an eating plan (not diet) designed to help you lose weight. Roger Troy Wilson has taken his success with weight loss and developed an eating plan that allows you to eat as many calories and carbs as you want and still lose weight. Roger Troy Wilson first describes his many attempts and failures at weight loss before he found something that actually worked. It all started with frozen grapes. In this book he effectively explains how and why his plan works. There is also a 14 day meal guide with recipes to get you started.

I was not sure this book would be very helpful, but decided to get it and see what the author had to say. I was pleasantly surprised. I have never had a weight problem, but my husband is trying to lose a few pounds. When the book came in the mail he actually read it first. By the time I had finished it he was waiting to get started. Knowing the biggest obstacle he struggles with on a diet is always being hungry, I am looking forward to using this plan since he will be able to eat until he is full. The idea is simple and easy to follow. The recipes he has tried so far have not tasted like "diet" food. I am excited to see how well this works for him. I will certainly recommend this book to others.

The Lord's Prayer

The Lord's Prayer, by R.T. Kendall, is an excellent book. Dr. Kendall has taken this most well-known prayer and broken it down line by line in order for the reader to better understand what the Lord is teaching. Not only do we need to pray the actual prayer, but we need to use the Lord's prayer as a model. Dr. Kendall uses Scripture to support all that he writes, and has obviously spent many hours searching the Scripture for understanding. By helping us understand this prayer, the reader is encouraged to have a deeper prayer life and walk with God.

This is a book that I highly recommend. It is well-written and easy to understand. There is a lot of information to be grasped, so it should be read more than once. I will definitely be reading it again.

Flight to Heaven

What an amazing story! Flight to Heaven by Capt. Dale Black is a book that is hard to put down. Capt. Black recounts the events surrounding a plane crash that took the lives of two men and nearly took his life as well. He shares how God mercifully spared his life and miraculously healed his body. More importantly, Capt. Black describes how this event in his life changed how he views others as well as the circumstances in his life. The fragility of life took on a whole new meaning for him as he realized the importance of sharing the life-changing gospel of Christ to everyone he meets.

I was skeptical as I started reading this book, but I soon found that only two chapters were devoted to Capt. Black's description of heaven. The majority of the book was spent on describing the long journey of spiritual as well as physical healing the author experienced. While I don't believe that God allows individuals to "visit" heaven I still highly recommend this book. You will be encouraged and exhorted in your faith.

Love is a Flame

Love is a Flame was such an encouraging book to read. James Stuart Bell compiled a group of marriage stories to encourage and inspire. The book contains stories about couples who were recently married to stories about couples who have been married for years. The issues in these stories affected couples who are in full-time Christain service, couples who are self-employed, and couples who work in the regular job force.

These stories covered topics such as pornography, unexpected illness, death of a child, adultery, discontent, and well as many other issues that can plague a marriage. In some of the stories the issues were with the husband and in others it was the wife that struggled. In spite of the seeming hopelessness of each situation each couple realized the value of their marriage and worked to resolve their issues using God's word, recognizing the power of prayer, and seeking human counsel and help when needed.

I appreciate the openness with which each story was told. I'm sure it was not always easy for each couple to write their personal struggles for everyone to read. Even if the reader is not struggling with any of these issues right now it is encouraging to know that when these storms of life come there is hope. We can emerge from these struggles with a greater love for our spouse and our God who carried us through.

No More Christian Nice Girl

What a refreshing change from the last book (Captivating) I read for review. No More Christian Nice Girl by Paul Coughlin and Jennifer D. Degler tackles the problem with just being "nice." Not only do they show why just being nice is wrong, but they teach us how to change. They do that by using many Biblical examples.

The emphasis of the book is placed on the fact that Jesus was not always nice. He did not always tell people what they wanted to hear; he told them what they needed to hear. He did things that made other people angry, and he even showed anger himself. The authors call him the "360-degree Jesus." Since, as Christians, we want to be more like Christ, we can't just pick and choose the aspects that we like or feel comfortable with. We need to emulate all of Christ, the "360-degree Jesus."

This book also uses the phrase "speaking the truth in love." The authors remind us that in every situation we have to speak the truth even if it is not what people want to hear. But, not only do we speak the truth, we must speak in love. We are also reminded that there are times when the wisest response is to say nothing at all.

I loved the fact that Scripture is abundantly used throughout the book. At the end of each chapter there are questions as well as Scripture passages to study. Real life examples and other modern examples are used, but God's Word is the foundation for all that is written. I enjoyed reading this book, and was given a lot to think about. Although I don't necessarily agree with all that the authors said, I believe there are truths to be gleaned from reading No More Christian Nice Girl. I do recommend this book to others. Just remember God's Word is the final authority, and this book is written by humans. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and give you discernment as you read this book or any other book.

Captivating

I was very excited to receive a copy of the book Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge. The title and subject really drew my attention, and I was very interested in what the Eldredges had to say. My excitement soon turned to dismay as I read. In order to keep this a review and not another book I will not go into great detail the problems I had with the book. There were some good aspects which I will list first, and then I will briefly describe some of the problems.

Before I even started reading I liked the idea of both John and Stasi authoring the book. I thought it would be very beneficial to get a man and womans point of view. A lot of times I just didn't know who was writing so that got a little confusing. They made several interesting observations about Scripture that I had never thought about and thus made me search those Scriptures to see for myself. For example, on pages 48 and 49 they are describing the scene in the Garden of Eden where Eve is being tempted by the serpent. On page 49 they write, "Now, to be fair, Adam doesn't exactly ride to her rescue." Definitely food for thought.

I appreciated the fact that Stasi was willing to open her heart and share a lot from her personal life. I'm sure it took a lot of courage to actually write her struggles, fears, and past sins in a book for all to read. I could tell she has a genuine concern for women and wants to do all she can to help.

The best part of the book was found on page 126. I believe this is precisely what the authors are trying to help us understand is the heart of the issue. They write, "Jesus says the first and greatest commandment is 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind' (Matt. 22:37)... It is from hearts filled with love for him that all good works and acts of love flow." I believe the authors are trying to help us understand that for a woman to be truly captivating and beautiful she will love God with all that she is. I absolutely agree, but this brings me to the problems I have with the book.

Instead of introducing this passage of Scripture and taking us to an understanding of how that looks for a woman today, they start the book by generalizing how all women think or what they want. Little girl dreams of princesses and fairy tales, dress-up clothes, and tea parties are expounded upon. Too many movies are quoted. (I have never even seen half of the movies they mentioned.) The first part of the book seemed totally unnecessary. Why do I need to be reminded of how I felt or acted as a child. All of that is right and good in its proper place, but how do princesses and tea parties help me to love God with all that I am?

The biggest issues I have with this book are over God's Word. I had hardly starting reading when on page 6 Stasi criticizes the Proverbs 31 woman! Then on page 45 Stasi (I think) writes, "Eve was given to the world as the incarnation of a beautiful, captivating God-a life offering, life-saving lover, a relational specialist, full of tender mercy and hope." WHAT?!?!?!? The incarnation? Someone please tell me I read that wrong! Song of Solomon was quoted occasionally and there again liberties were taken that I do not believe were accurate. On page 197 the author again writes, "Ladies, you are the Bride of Christ." Now I understand that this is a book written to women so the author could have just been using the word ladies, because as Christian ladies we are part of the church. However, since there are other theological issues with this book I'm not quite sure how to read that statement. Then on paage 220 the author again writes, "He [Jesus] is captivated by your beauty." I'm sorry, but I can't agree with that statement either. There is a lot I could say just on these few quotes, but this is a review not another book. These quotes are just a few examples of why I have problems with this book.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this book to anyone. There are too many theological issues. If you do choose to read it, be very careful. The authors make there ideas sound very good and Biblical. That is the problem! They are THEIR ideas! Have a copy of the Bible beside you if you do read Captivating and compare what you are reading with what God's Word says. You will find that Captivating does not line up with the Scriptures. Follow God's Word (not me or the author of any book) and you will find the truth.

Somewhere to Belong

Somewhere to Belong by Judith Miller is a great read. This is a book about two young girls with completely different backgrounds. Life in the Amana colonies is all Johanna has ever known. Life changes completely for Berta when her parents decide to move to Amana. Each girl has secrets to uncover, as well as secret desires to fulfill. I enjoyed the way the book is written from each girls' standpoint. The author alternates between Johanna and Berta to allow them to each tell their own story. Even though there was deception and disobedience throughout the book, the consequences of these actions were clearly presented.

I had never heard of the Amana colonies previously, and I expected the colonies to be much like the Amish. This was not the case. The author did a great job helping the reader understand what life in the Amana colonies was like. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. Sixteen Brides

I don't know where to start with this review of Sixteen Brides by Stephanie Grace Whitson. I guess I will start with the title. The title scared me at first. How in the world was I going to keep up with sixteen different people in one book? Thankfully, the "brides" were narrowed down to only 6 that I had to keep straight. I am a mother to three young children, so several days might go by without picking up a book. This made it challenging to keep up with even just 6 women. The "brides" were taken to Nebraska on the pretense of homesteading. When they discovered they had been deceived and were intended to be brides, several of them decided to go no farther. They chose to homestead as they originally intended. I enjoyed the story line, but I think it was a bit too much for one book. I found myself having to reread in order to keep everything straight. When I read a book I want to be able to remember and follow the story line even if it is a couple of days since I last picked up the book. I appreciate the fact that God's provision, watch care, and forgiveness is evident throughout the book. The ending seemed rather abrupt to me. The women had just finished setting up their homestead and now most of them are going to get married. I don't know how it could or should have ended. There were just too many loose ends to tie up. I felt like I was left hanging. All in all I'm really not sure about this book. It was an interesting read but awfully confusing.

Hearts Awakening

It has been awhile since I have read anything by Delia Parr, so I was looking forward to reading the book Hearts Awakening. I was not disappointed! A young woman becomes housekeeper for a man and his two young sons, and is presented with a marriage proposal after only a couple of days. Scandal surrounds this man, Jackson, and Ellie has no hope of another proposal. Her age and looks have determined her status, so Ellie accepts his proposal. Life is not easy for Ellie, but her faith in God's Word and His promises guide her steps and decisions. Her faithfulness is rewarded when Jackson surrenders his life to Christ, and offers Ellie his heart. This is a story full of laughter, tears, anger, and love. It will challenge and inspire the reader. I will be happy to recommend this book to others. Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for sending me a free copy of this book to preview. She Walks in Beauty

I finished the book, She Walks in Beauty, by Siri Mitchell. I have never read anything by this author before and enjoyed reading her book. This book is about a young girl preparing to enter society with the intention of finding a husband. The husband she is to find has already been determined by her aunt and father, and she is to win him at all costs. At first I thought the book seemed a bit overdone, but as I continued to read I decided that I just didn't realize what all went into preparing a girl to debut. However, I still think that some things could have been told with fewer words. There was just the right amount of humor scattered throughout the book that added to the enjoyment. The plot was simple and allowed me to read without having to think. Having said all that I am also very disappointed in this book. A christian author publishing through a christian publisher has such a huge opportunity as well as a responsibility to present the gospel or a christian theme very clearly. Although the main character questions her worth to God the idea was not developed or resolved using God' Word. In fact, on page 340 the author writes, "In fact, I now suspected, her entire theology had been taken from the hymnal." Now I am not against good hymns, and I know that they can be a blessing and an encouragement, but why would the author throw away such a perfect opportunity to present God's Word the Bible as the ultimate authority for our "entire theology?"
